What is the “status quo bias” that prevents us from starting new habits?

There are many habits that we want to try in order to improve our work and life, such as exercise, dieting, yoga, and studying.
These are actions that we know we should do if we want to do them, but when we try to do them, why can’t we do them?

The reason is that we are comfortable with our current state.

It doesn’t mean that the status quo is the best, but it doesn’t mean that we will die if we don’t exercise, or that we will have problems if we don’t lose weight or study right away.
It’s just that we enjoy the status quo for now, so we let it be.
In our unconscious mind, we place more value on maintaining the status quo than on changing it.

Breaking the law of inertia in life is hard.

The human mind wants to maintain the status quo, which is like the law of inertia in physics.
Everyone has a system that has been built up over the decades that they have lived.
It is very difficult to break that system and build a new one. So, we don’t want to change.
In psychology, there is a term called status quo bias.
According to the status quo bias, people tend to want to maintain the status quo and are averse to change.
The decision to maintain the status quo is more persuasive than the rational decision to improve the status quo.

If you move while maintaining the status quo, you can change it.

Now, let’s talk about what to do.
A good way to deal with this is to “start moving while maintaining the status quo.

For example, if you don’t want to go out and jog, try walking first.
Make the change from the current situation a small one.

When people want to start something, they want to gain momentum and change it all at once, but in reality, it doesn’t work that way.
This is why they affirm the status quo.
It is important to keep the scope of change as small as possible.
The reason why we want to change all at once is because we first have the desire to change all at once.
However, there is a difference between changing and being changed.
It is possible to change temporarily.
But you can’t change all at once.
If you can’t change all at once, it’s important to change even a little.

It is easier to start a habit when you declare it.

It is also effective to declare a habit in order to do it immediately. If you are able to do so, report it as well.
If you live with your family, you can use this method.
If you live with your family, you can declare what you are going to do to them, or even your close friends.
Nowadays, there is a place called twitter where you can build a loose relationship. and when you do, tweet about your progress.
It’s best if someone comments or praises you, but even if they don’t, it’s important that someone is watching.

Declarations are also effective when you want to continue.

This is effective not only for “doing it immediately” but also for “continuing”.
People are creatures that want to be consistent. For example, if you tell people that you are on a diet, they will recognize you as such.
Being on a diet and not being on a diet are incompatible, so if people recognize you as someone who is on a diet, you will be able to continue your diet in order to maintain that consistency.

Declare something and do it. If you continue this cycle, people will start to recognize you as someone who can do things quickly.
Let’s start with something small, declare it, and then do it.
